The Hickman Spring Surprise: Birds Nesting in Your Dryer Vent

Every spring we get calls from Hickman homeowners whose dryers suddenly stopped working. The cause is almost always the same — and it's nesting season.

Every March and April, calls from Hickman go up sharply. The story is almost always the same: the dryer was working fine in February, and now in mid-spring it suddenly takes forever to dry a load, or won't heat properly, or smells weird when it runs. Nine times out of ten, the diagnosis is the same — birds have nested in the exterior dryer vent cap.

Rural Hickman properties are perfect bird habitat. Open eaves, tall oaks, lots of insects, low foot traffic. Several species — house sparrows, starlings, sometimes barn swallows — actively look for warm dry tunnels to nest in during early spring. A dryer vent cap that's missing its flap, or whose flap doesn't close cleanly, is exactly that. The birds build their nest right inside the first few feet of vent pipe, where it's warm and protected.

Once the nest is in place, your dryer is essentially venting against a wall. Hot, moist air from the dryer can't escape. It backs up into the vent line, condenses, and creates the perfect environment for lint to compact into a wet mat. The dryer's heating element keeps cycling on, hotter and longer, trying to dry clothes that aren't getting any drier because the moisture has nowhere to go. This is how dryer fires start in spring. It's also how dryers get destroyed — burned-out heating elements, blown thermal fuses, sometimes warped drum bearings.

Don't try to remove an active bird nest yourself. First, several common species are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and removing an active nest with eggs or chicks can carry penalties. Second, the nesting material is usually compacted deep into the vent and saturated with moisture, lint, and droppings — it's a biohazard you don't want to disturb without protective gear. Third, the underlying problem is the failed vent cap, and just removing the nest doesn't fix that.

Our process for Hickman bird-nest calls: assess whether the nest is active (eggs or chicks present) or abandoned. If active, we either wait until fledging if the homeowner can do without the dryer for a couple weeks, or we coordinate with local wildlife rehabbers if there's a real urgency. If abandoned, we remove all nesting material from inside, do a full vent cleaning to clear the lint mat that built up while the vent was blocked, replace the failed exterior cap with a code-compliant model that has a working flap and a pest screen, and verify exit airflow.

The new vent cap is the prevention piece. A modern cap with a louvered flap and a fine metal mesh screen prevents birds from getting in while still letting full airflow out. They're not expensive and they last for years. We install them as a standard part of any rural Hickman vent service, replacing whatever rusted, broken, or missing cap is there now.

Beyond birds, rural vent caps in Hickman face other wildlife: rats, mice, and the occasional squirrel will all use an open vent if they can find one. We've cleaned out vents with rodent nesting material, droppings, and once a dead opossum that had crawled in and gotten stuck. Pest screens on the cap solve all of it. The cost difference between a basic cap and a properly screened one is small, and the protection lasts for years.

If you live in Hickman or the surrounding rural areas and your dryer started acting up sometime this spring, schedule a vent inspection now. We make the drive without travel surcharges, we're equipped to handle whatever's inside the vent, and we'll get you back to normal dry cycles. While we're there, we'll upgrade the exterior cap so you're not on the same call sheet next March.
