Hickman Allergies Don't Have to Be This Bad. Start With Your Ducts.

Living in Hickman means living among orchards. Almonds to one side, walnuts to another, sometimes peaches or stone fruit, plus the seasonal cover crops in between. It's beautiful, the air smells incredible during bloom, and your immune system pays for it from February through October. If allergy medication has become a permanent feature of your life out here, the problem might not be your immune system — it might be your house.

Pollen doesn't stay outside. It rides in on shoes, clothes, pets, and open doors, and it gets pulled into the HVAC system through the return ducts. Once it's in the duct system, it doesn't leave on its own. It accumulates. It coats the blower wheel. It settles on the evaporator coil. And every time the heat or A/C kicks on, some of it comes back out the supply registers and into the air you're breathing while you sleep.

Hickman has multiple bloom and harvest seasons stacked through the year. Almond bloom in February-March is heavy. Walnut catkins drop in April-May. Stone fruit blooms overlap. Then summer harvest dust starts in late July and runs through September. Then leaf drop and orchard shredding in fall. There's almost no part of the year out here when the outdoor pollen and dust load is actually low.

What that means for indoor air strategy: Hickman homes need to be cleaned more frequently than the recommended 'every 3 to 5 years' you see in industry guides. Every 2 to 3 years for the duct system is realistic. More often if anyone in the household has diagnosed asthma or severe allergies. The single deep cleaning resets the baseline; consistent filter changes maintain it; periodic re-cleaning keeps it ahead of the cumulative load.

Filter selection matters more here than in town homes. The standard $2 fiberglass filters from the grocery store are designed to protect the equipment, not your lungs — they catch large particles and let the fine pollen through. A pleated MERV 11 filter catches a meaningful fraction of pollen and has to be your minimum. MERV 13 is even better if your system can handle the airflow restriction (most modern systems can; have us verify if you're not sure).

Beyond filters, two upgrades make a real difference for Hickman homes with allergy sufferers. First, a whole-house media filter cabinet — a deep filter housing on the return that holds a 4- or 5-inch pleated filter, which lasts 6 to 12 months and catches dramatically more than a 1-inch filter. Second, a UV/IAQ system installed in the air handler that uses ultraviolet light to neutralize pollen, mold spores, and other organic particulate as air passes through. Both are reasonable additions during a HVAC service visit.

There's also a behavioral piece. During heavy bloom or harvest, run the HVAC fan on 'circulate' mode for 15 minutes per hour even when you don't need heating or cooling. That moves house air through the filter constantly instead of only when the compressor cycles. It's the cheapest air-purification strategy you can run because it uses the equipment you already have.
