Hughson: Orchards on Three Sides, Dust on All Four

There's no escaping the ag dust load if you live in Hughson. But there is a way to keep it out of the air you actually breathe.

Hughson sits in a particularly intense pocket of agricultural Stanislaus County. Drive any direction out of town and within a mile you're in orchards β€” almonds, walnuts, peaches, apricots. The bloom is gorgeous, the harvest is loud, and the dust load on every home in town is among the highest in the county. There's no realistic way to reduce what's in the outside air. But there's a lot you can do about what ends up in your indoor air.

The problem with ag dust is that it's fine. Very fine. The particles that drift off shaken almond orchards or off the harvested floors of walnut groves are mostly in the PM2.5 to PM10 range β€” small enough to slip through standard furnace filters, small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, and small enough to find their way into every crack and seam in your duct system. Once they're in the ducts, they coat everything and recirculate every time the HVAC runs.

We've been cleaning Hughson homes for years and the pattern is consistent. Even relatively new homes with reasonably clean filters have a measurable layer of fine yellow-tan dust inside the supply ducts within a couple of years of being built. Older homes off Whitmore, Hatch, and the side streets near downtown are worse β€” the original duct systems were built before energy codes required serious sealing, and the cumulative load over 30 or 40 years is significant.

The strategy for Hughson air quality is layered. Start with a deep duct cleaning to reset the system to actual clean. Then upgrade your filter to something that can catch ag dust β€” pleated MERV 11 minimum, MERV 13 if your system supports it. Then change that filter on a tight cadence: every 60 days during normal months, every 30 days during bloom or harvest. Then run the HVAC fan on 'circulate' mode during heavy ag activity to keep house air moving through that filter constantly.

If you want to get more aggressive β€” and many Hughson homeowners with allergy or asthma issues do β€” there are two infrastructure upgrades worth considering. A whole-house media filter cabinet adds a 4- or 5-inch deep pleated filter on the return side, which dramatically outperforms a 1-inch filter and only needs changing every 6 to 12 months. A UV-C light installed in the air handler neutralizes biological particulate as air passes through. Together those upgrades make a Hughson home noticeably easier to live in during bloom and harvest.

Note specifically about almond harvest. Late August through September, the shaking starts and the orchard floors get cleaned by sweepers that kick up a continuous dust plume. If you live anywhere from downtown Hughson east toward the Tuolumne or south toward Hatch, you're getting hit with that plume on a regular basis depending on wind. The single highest-impact thing you can do during harvest is keep windows closed, run the HVAC fan to circulate air through your filter, and accept that the filter is going to load fast for a few weeks.

After harvest is the right time to schedule a duct cleaning if you're due. The system is at its dirtiest, the cleaning has the biggest visible payoff, and you get the benefit of clean ducts heading into winter when the heat starts running constantly. We see a meaningful spike in Hughson booking requests in October and November for exactly this reason.

We're up the road from our Turlock shop, no travel surcharge to Hughson, and most jobs go on the calendar same week. The free in-home inspection includes putting a camera in your ducts so you can see what's actually in there. Honest pricing, family-owned, and we've been serving Hughson for 25 years.
