If Your Empire Home Still Has Foil Flex Dryer Hose, Replace It Now

The white plastic and foil hose in older Empire laundry rooms is no longer code — and it's a serious fire hazard.

Walk into the laundry room of any Empire home built before about 2000 and there's a decent chance you'll see a length of white plastic or foil hose connecting the back of the dryer to the wall vent. That hose is called transition duct, it was standard for decades, and it's no longer allowed under current building code for one simple reason: it catches fire.

The 2009 International Residential Code, which California has adopted in updated form, requires that transition duct between dryer and wall vent be either smooth-walled metal or a UL-listed semi-rigid metal hose. The old white plastic hose is explicitly banned, and the foil flex hose is heavily restricted. The reason is that the ribbed interior surface of those older hoses is essentially a lint trap — every ridge catches fibers, and once enough lint accumulates, the dryer's heat is enough to ignite it.

The code change doesn't apply retroactively, which is why so many Empire homes still have the old hose in place. It's not that the home is out of compliance — it's that the original install was legal at the time and nobody has touched it since. But legal-when-installed doesn't mean safe-now. We routinely pull old white plastic hose out of Empire laundry rooms that's so packed with lint the airflow is down 80 percent.

Replacement is easy, cheap, and dramatically safer. Modern semi-rigid aluminum transition duct has a smooth interior, holds its shape (so it doesn't get crushed when you push the dryer back), and meets current code. We swap it as part of a vent cleaning when we find old material in place. The whole replacement adds about ten minutes to the job. Customers who finally get the white plastic hose out are usually shocked at how much faster their dryer runs afterward.

While we're talking about old materials in Empire homes: many of the metal vent caps on the exterior of older houses have rusted, lost their flap, or been bird-nested. A vent cap with a missing or stuck flap leaves the vent pipe open to weather and animals year-round. We've found everything from rats to swallow nests in the first three feet of vent inside a wall cap. That's a fire risk and a pest risk at the same time.

The full vent inspection on an older Empire home goes like this: pull the dryer, inspect and replace the transition hose if needed, clean the rigid pipe through the wall or attic with a rotary brush, vacuum out all loose material, inspect and replace the exterior cap if it's failed, and verify exit airflow. About 45 minutes total, and the dryer that's been running 90-minute loads is suddenly back to 40 minutes per load.

Energy savings on a properly cleaned and updated dryer vent are measurable. A dryer running half as long uses about half the electricity for that load. For a household doing 8 to 10 loads a week, that adds up to real dollars on the PG&E bill over a year. The vent cleaning effectively pays for itself within the first year on most Empire homes, before you even count the safety upgrade.

We service Empire as part of our regular route, no travel fees, same pricing as the bigger towns. If your laundry room still has the old white plastic or foil flex hose, schedule a vent cleaning and we'll replace it as part of the visit. This is one of those updates where the cost is small, the safety upgrade is huge, and there's no reason to put it off.
